localStorage in iOS5 Private Browsing mode

Attempting to use localStorage.setItem in iOS5 Private Browsing mode will throw the exception

QUOTA_EXCEEDED_ERRROR DOM Exception 22.

But getItem and removeItem calls do not throw.
